Farm Fun: A Mid-Holiday Recap of Our Exciting Summer Events!
We’re almost halfway through the school holidays, and our child and youth team have been super busy putting on some brilliant events - all so that our community can enjoy free access to nature based activities and benefit from the amazing space we have here in the city. It's been a joy to see so many smiling faces at the farm, getting back to nature and making the most of their time off school.
Friday Playscheme: A Record-Breaking Start
Our Friday playscheme has reached new heights of popularity this year. In the first week alone, we saw close to 250 children join in the fun, with over 116 free community lunches served thanks to funding from Swansea Council.
At last Friday’s session, we thoroughly enjoyed a visit from Evie at Swansea Council who led our community members in a butterfly count on Cadle Heath. Armed with guides and magnifying glasses, we learned about the importance of butterflies as pollinators and indicators of a healthy environment. The count not only contributed valuable data to national conservation efforts but also provided a wonderful opportunity for children and adults to connect with nature and enjoy the beauty of our hidden gem at the back of the farm - Cadle Heath.
One guardian said: “Don't know what we'd do without your playscheme. We love it and my son can be free to be as busy as he likes.”
Beekeeping Day: A Buzzing Success
One of the highlights of our recent events was Beekeeping Day. Guided by our knowledgeable staff, everyone who attended discovered the vital role bees play in our ecosystem and observed hives up close. The day was educational and exciting, leaving everyone with a newfound appreciation for these incredible pollinators.
One participant said: “Incredible family beekeepers day at Swansea Community Farm. What an informative experience we had. We had so much fun and learned the so many vital facts about how important bees are to our existence. Thank you to all the staff at the farm for a wonderful family day, we can not thank everyone enough. We have created such beautiful memories.”
Family Volunteer Day: Community Spirit in Action
Our Family Volunteer Day was another fantastic event, bringing families together to give back to the farm and the community. Volunteers of all ages pitched in on various projects, from planting in the allotment and cleaning animal enclosures. It was heart warming to see so many families working side by side, creating a sense of community spirit and teaching the value of teamwork and volunteering.
Muddy Play Session in Blaenymaes: Messy Fun for All
The Muddy Play session in the Blaenymaes community was a hit with adventurous kids who aren’t afraid to get a little dirty. With activities designed to encourage creativity and outdoor exploration, children built dens, created nature-inspired art, and played games. It was a fantastic opportunity for kids to connect with nature and enjoy unstructured, imaginative play.
Thank you to all of our community members who have participated so far — your enthusiasm and support make these events truly special. We can’t wait to see what the rest of the holidays bring!
Looking Ahead
As we move into the second half of the school holidays, our Friday playschemes will be continuing each week until the end of the school break with a different nature theme. This week (9th August), it's all about Ladybirds and beetles. Come and along and join in the fun. There's no need to book, just check out the poster for details.
Join Us for An Evening Bat Walk
On Thursday 15th August come along and join us for a bat walk across Penderi. We'll be setting off from the 104 Broughton Avenue at 8:15pm for an evening of bat spotting. As the sun sets, our knowledgeable guides will lead you on a walk and provide fascinating insights into bat behavior, ecology, and the vital role these nocturnal creatures play in our ecosystem.
